What is vMix?

vMix is a highly versatile, software-based live video production and streaming mixer designed to run on the Windows operating system. Unlike traditional, expensive hardware video switchers, vMix leverages modern PC and GPU (graphics card) power to mix, switch, record, and live stream high-definition (HD) and 4K video sources.

It has become an industry standard for independent broadcasters, digital news publishers, corporate AV teams, and live event producers because it provides a complete “studio-in-a-box” workflow at a fraction of the cost of legacy broadcast hardware.

Core Capabilities

• Live Video Switching & Mixing: Supports a massive variety of simultaneous inputs, including physical capture cards (SDI/HDMI), webcams, network streams, local video files, audio files, and live web browser captures. Operators can seamlessly transition between these sources in real-time.
• vMix Call: An integrated remote-interview feature that allows producers to bring guests directly into the live broadcast using just a web browser and a webcam. It functions like a high-quality, ultra-low-latency video conferencing tool built specifically for live TV.
• vMix Replay: A dedicated continuous slow-motion instant replay system. It is heavily utilized in live sports and events, allowing operators to capture, tag, and playback multi-camera highlights on the fly.
• GT Title Designer: A robust, built-in graphics engine that allows users to create high-quality, animated lower-thirds, news tickers, and data-driven overlays that can be updated live during a broadcast without rendering pauses.

Key Technical Features

• Simultaneous Streaming, Recording & Output: vMix can simultaneously push a live stream to multiple social platforms (like Facebook Live, YouTube, or custom RTMP servers), record a high-quality master file directly to a hard drive, and send the output feed to physical studio screens or projectors.
• Deep NDI Integration: Features native, extensive support for Network Device Interface (NDI) technology. This allows vMix to send and receive high-quality, low-latency video and audio over a standard local area network (LAN), dramatically reducing the need for expensive physical SDI/HDMI cabling.
• Virtual Sets & Chroma Keying: Includes a highly accurate, real-time green screen (chroma key) tool and supports full-motion virtual sets. This allows producers to simulate expensive, professional-looking newsrooms using very small physical spaces.
• GPU Hardware Acceleration: The software relies heavily on the computer’s Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) rather than the CPU. This efficiency is what allows a standard, well-equipped desktop or high-end laptop to process complex 4K video switching without freezing or dropping frames.
