What is Athensa Playbox?

Athensa (the successor to the well-known broadcast brand PlayBox Technology) is a professional broadcast automation and software suite. It is most widely recognized for its Channel-in-a-Box architecture, which integrates all the critical hardware and software elements needed to keep a television station on the air—combining playlist automation, media playout, and interactive on-air graphics into a single streamlined system.
The software is highly modular and format-agnostic, making it a standard solution for satellite TV channels, cable networks, live news studios, and internet streaming broadcasts.
Core Software Modules
ATHENSA Playout: The primary broadcasting engine designed for secure, unattended 24/7 operations. It handles real-time video decoding and allows operators to make non-destructive edits to a schedule while the broadcast is live. It natively supports UHD (4K), HD, and SD outputs simultaneously via SDI or IP streaming (including RTMP, H.264, and HEVC/H.265 compression).
ATHENSA Graphics: A highly interactive on-air character generator (CG) and graphics manager. This module manages visual broadcast overlays like scrolling news tickers (crawls and rolls), animated station logos, picture-in-picture templates, and digital clocks. It runs in complete sync with the playout engine to trigger graphics automatically based on metadata within the playlist.
ATHENSA Ingest: A live capture application that enables multiple channels of video (from digital SDI feeds, satellite streams, or analog sources) to be recorded directly to the broadcast server. Crucially for fast-paced environments, content ingested through this module is available for on-air playback within seconds of the recording starting.
Athensa Studio: Specifically tailored for live productions, studio video walls, and live news broadcasting. It is built for manual control and fast response times, allowing operators to trim, loop, jump, or shuttle directly to different media clips seamlessly without interrupting the live session.
Key Technical Features
Multi Parallel Output (MPO): Allows the system to generate multiple simultaneous broadcast signals at once, such as sending out an HD-SDI feed to a cable provider while simultaneously pushing a compressed IP stream to the web.
Format Flexibility: Broadcasters can place different media file formats, resolutions, and frame rates sequentially in a single playlist. The engine handles the real-time rescaling and playback without requiring operators to pre-convert or transcode the files.
Collapsible K-Playlists: A timeline-based interface that graphically scales playlist items based on their total duration, providing operators with an intuitive visual representation of the scheduled programming block.
Advanced Audio & Subtitling: Features integrated loudness and true-peak audio metering, alongside extensive support for multi-channel audio tracks, multiple languages, and real-time open or closed subtitle insertion.
